Coimbatore: The farmers of Semmandampalayam and Karumathampati staged a protest against Power Grid officials who were in the process of conducting a land survey for the construction of high tension electric towers. In spite of the objection, officials continued to do their work with the police protection.

The Power Grid Corporation of India has planned to tap electricity from Chhattisgarh to Tamil Nadu and Kerala. For this purpose, a Sub Power Station in Pugalur, Tirupur was to be set up. With the help of high tension electric towers, they planned to provide electricity by passing the wires through the farmlands.
The project is to be implemented in the farms by constructing power towers in 13 states including Tiruppur, Erode, Karur, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. The farmers of these 13 states have already raised their objection for these projects and staged protests. Due to the parliamentary elections, the land survey process was withheld temporarily.
In this scenario, the Power Grid Officials resumed conducting a land survey this morning at Semmandampalayam, Karumathampatti near Somanur. In spite of the opposition raised by the landowners, the Power Grid Officials continued to measure the land backed by police.
Meanwhile, farmers staged a protest in their lands when the Power Grid officials were conducting a land survey near the A.R.C School, Karumathampatti. But the police intervened and arrested the protestors. The same situation prevailed at the Semmandampalayam village where farmers climbed upon the tower and threatened to jump from the top if the Power Grid officials did not stop the land survey work.
The officials are still trying to convince the farmers to stop protesting. Owing to this situation, a large number of police have been deployed in the area for safety. The farmers have reportedly said that they are not against the project but urged the Central Government to devise a plan to allow electricity through underground means in place of constructing high power towers.
