Coimbatore: The District Police and Home Guards provided tea and refreshments to all heavy vehicle drivers between 2 am and 4 am along highways and also advised them on safety measures while driving.
Long-distance heavy vehicle drivers reportedly lose control while driving and cause accidents, post-midnight on the Pollachi, Mettupalayam and Palakkad highways. The reason attributed to such accidents are the long arduous hours that these drivers endure. To prevent night hour accidents, vehicles are usually stopped at various checkpoints to check for drunken driving.
In the new initiative to prevent such accidents, the Superintendent Sujith Kumar ordered the District Police and Home Guards to stop heavy vehicles at the Unjavelampatti region in Pollachi and provide them with tea, and also advice them on safe driving during night hours and in the wee hours of the morning.
Assistant Superintendent Siva Kumar, East Police Station Inspector Venkataraman, Home Guards Regional Caption Balaji Raju and Assistant Regional Caption Vidya Shree were also present during the awareness drive. The District Police are confident that the new initiative to stop long-distance drivers of heavy vehicles to refresh them will go a long way in preventing accidents.
