Auto drivers petition Collector to ban Rapido

Coimbatore: Citing that there is no provision for two-wheeler taxis to operate, according to the central and Tamil Nadu motor vehicle rules, more than 100 auto drivers from the city thronged the District Collectorate on Monday demanding to ban Rapido, the first bike taxi in the city.

"They lure the customers by charging half the price we charge, however the customers are unaware of the fact that they operate without permits. More than 5000 auto drivers in the city are on the verge of losing their livelihood because of the presence of two-wheeler taxis aggregators like Rapido", the auto drivers said in anguish.

It is to be re-called that in February 2019, the auto drivers caught 40 such Rapido bike taxis which were illegally functioning in the city and handed them over to the regional transport office.

"Despite the ban, they continue to operate and affect our income. Hence, the district administration has to initiate legal steps to stop their operation", the petitioners urged.

They also professed that auto drivers in the city have been charging as per the meter rates fixed by the government.
