Coimbatore: Finally, the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has turned it's attention towards management of Construction and Demolition (C&D) debris in the city. The idea of setting up 17 collection centres for C&D wastes has brought much relief among the environmentalists and lake conservationalists who have been crying foul of the increasing dumping of C&D wastes along the water bodies and reserve forest areas.

Way back in 2016, a project for setting up a C&D Construction and Demolition (C&D) Waste Processing and Recycling Facility in Ukkadam was flagged off amidst much fanfare. However, the project did not move an inch due to various reasons including a mega failure of the PPP agreement. The private company which was granted with the contract allegedly failed to pay import duties to take delivery of the machineries from Chennai port and thus halted the project.
Though CCMC announced of issuing fresh tenders, the project did not see any light apart from the tall standing compound walls.
In order to address the issue of piling C&D wastes, the CCMC has identified 17 centres across the four zones where construction wastes can be dumped. Four centres in South, East and North Zones and Five centres in West zone has been identified.
Briefing on this a senior Corporation official said, "As a temporary solution to manage C&D wastes, CCMC have earmarked these centres. C&D debris from the respective zones will be accumalated in these centres and once the C&D waste processing facility is established, all the accumulated waste would be transferred to the plant."
He also affirmed that CCMC's plan to set up the C&D plant at Ukkadam will be realised, shortly.
In the Swacch Sarvekshan ranking for this year, Coimbatore slipped from 16th to 40th place last year. Though there are several reasons attributed to the fall, the major reason was the stalled C&D project.
Speaking on this, J. Sravan Kumar, Corporation Commissioner said, "There has been an undue delay in setting up of Ukkadam Construction debris recycling plant which even attributed to the fall in points in the recent Swachh Survekshan ratings. The plant in Ukkadam which was supposed to be functional a year back was delayed because of the contractor. The contractor's failure to deliver and set up the machinery at the plant ontime has forced us to revoke his contract and re-issue a fresh tender."
"Soon, CCMC will call for a fresh tender.
Till then the C&D wastes will be collected at these 17 centres in all zones", the Commissioner noted.
