Coimbatore: The smart cameras installed by NGO UYIR along with Coimbatore City Police have turned to be a nightmare for traffic violators, as 57 of such reckless motorists have been captured by the state-of-the-art smart cameras installed at five signals in the city.

In a bid to identify traffic violators at signals, NGO UYIR along with Coimbatore City Police installed five smart cameras on Avinashi Road from JM Bakery to Lakshmi Mills signal. The high end cameras are capable of capturing unruly motorists who jump signals, overspeeding, not wearing helmets, seat belts, too many pillion riders in two wheelers among others from long distances. The footages of the same can be accessed at the control room where E-challans will be generated and sent to the erring motorists.
So far, Rs. 94,000 has been collected as fine from 57 traffic defaulters, said an official release from the city traffic police.
The increasing number of accidents has urged the city police to implement novel ideas to educate and warn the motorists to refrain from reckless driving which not only cost their lives but others. According to data, a majority of fatal road accidents are result of non-adherence of traffic rules. Hence, the city traffic police have tightened the vigil over traffic violators and have been levying fines.
In the past five months, close to Rs. 3.5 crore as been levied as fine from 1,93,728 people for various violations. And, 10,868 repeat traffic offenders were identified out of which, the licence of 2,271 people has been temporarily cancelled by the RTO.
From motorists who failed to stop by the traffic signals, an amount of Rs.6.7 lakhs was collected. Data reveals that 8460 people jumped traffic signals from January to May 2019. A sum of Rs. 95 lakhs has been collected from 1455 motorists for drunk driving. And, Rs. 2.5 lakhs was collected from 1260 two-wheelers and four-wheelers for using mobile phones while driving.
The city traffic police have appealed to the motorists to abide by traffic rules and transform this city to an accident free city.
