The Nilgiris : The 143rd death anniversary of William Graham McIvor (1824 - June 8, 1876) the architect of Ooty's botanical garden was observed today in Ooty.

William Graham McIvor, a Scottish gardener and superintendent of the Neilgherry Cinchona plantations in Ooty ,established the botanical garden in 1867 and thus brought horticulture to the Nilgiris.

Remembering and honouring his exemplary work on his 143rd memorial day, the horticultural and botanical garden administration paid tribute to his grave at St. Stephen’s Church.

He was not only the architect of botanical garden but also was very instrumental in sourcing many exotic fruits and flowers to the Nilgiris.

He spent nearly three decades in the Nilgiris and developed horticulture and botany to a whole new level in the Nilgiris.

He died in the Nilgiris on June 8, 1876 and his body was entombed in the cemetery of St. Stephen's Church Complex.

Earlier, the Nilgiri Documentation Centre made an appeal to the garden administration to consider installing a plaque on his memory, at the entrance of the gardens.
