The Nilgiris : Over 100 in patients at the 100-year-old Government hospital in Coonoor suffer severe discomfort and hygienic issues, after the toilets there ran out of water.

"The situation worsens with everyday. It's now more than 15 days since water scarcity prevails in the toilets. Many times the toilets run out of water leaving them stink with feces all over. The municipality and the district adminsitration has done nothing to combat the issue and to ensure basic amenities for the poor patients who approach government hospitals for treatment", lament the patients.

The Coonoor government hospital is thronged by patients from many villages in and around the hill town. In a day, over 100 in-patients get treated at the hospital. In this scenario, it is alleged that over 15 days the hospital has not been supplied with water by the Municipality.

The situation has caused severe hygienic issues to the patients who complain of lack of water in toilet pipelines and drinking water. The worst affected is the toilets in the pregnancy ward, say patients.

As the situation has not improved, many patients sought for discharge and left to their homes. The attenders of the patients are forced to search for public toilets outside the hospital.

The callousness of the hospital authorities, municipality and the district administration had irked the patients who fear of getting infected with new diseases due to the pathetic state of the hospital.
