The alerts comes after the formation of a low-pressure area off Kerala and Karnataka coasts along with an offshore trough from the Maharashtra to Kerala coasts. The low pressure has provoked the monsoons to hit the coast of Kerala on Saturday.
"A red alert, which means ‘very heavy’ to ‘extremely heavy’ rainfall, has been issued in Thrissur district on June 10 and in Ernakulam, Malappuram, and Kozhikode districts on June 11.
An orange alert, which means ‘heavy’ to ‘very heavy’ rainfall, has been issued in state capital Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam and Thrissur on June 9-10.
All relevant state departments and officials have been directed to be in a state of preparedness, as the southern districts of Kollam and Alappuzha, districts of Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Wayanad which are predicted to receive isolated rains, heavy to very heavy rain (between 11.5 cm and 20 cm), a special bulletin issued by the local office of the IMD said.
The State disaster management has released a handbook urging the respective departments at taluk levels on monsoon preparedness and disaster response
The district administration has been advised to open control rooms at taluk levels in the notified areas of red, yellow and orange alerts.
