The Nilgiris : In a welcome move, farmers in Nilgiris are steadily transitioning to natural farming. The visible deterioration in the soil fertility and quality has enlightened farmers against the harmful effects of using chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

To recoup the affected lands into being fertile and high-yielding, the farmers are now using cow dung and earthworm manure. Chemical fertilizers not only affected the soil but also the yield causing long-lasting effects on the land.

The Horticulture officials say that they are constantly encouraging farmers who are transitioning from using chemicals to natural farming. They also added that with the photocopies of their lands' patta and chitta details, the natural manure and fertilizers are being distributed for free and also at a subsidized rate by the Government.
