The Nilgiris : When asked whether Primary and Middle schools with low student strength could be closed and existing students moved to other Government schools, the Chief Educational Officer Nasarrudin said that there were no such plans but plans were afoot with Principals of schools to increase the existing student strength in the August-September admissions. After the efforts are in place, the decision to merge schools will be taken, he added.

The Coonoor District Education Officer, Ambikabathy said, "The student-teacher ratio for Primary schools is 30:1, for Middle school is 35:1 and Higher secondary is 40:1 with one Principal for every school, according to Government rules. But since the schools have less than five students enrolled, there are plans to merge the students with other Government schools. Since there are transportation difficulties for students from interior regions of the District, the Chief Educational Officer will look to probe and deal with the issue," he added.
