The Nilgiris: This year, even as many organisations celebrated World Environment Day in unique ways, the Clean Coonoor organisation observed the day by removing the waste from the river beside the Coonoor bus station. This initiative was inaugurated by the District Collector, Innocent Divya.

Clean Coonoor is a voluntary organisation which has conducted many events related to keeping the environment clean. While talking about the reasons behhind the initiative of the organisation to clean the river this year, the organiser of Clean Coonoor, Samantha Iyanna said, "It is saddening to see Nilgiris' water resources being depleted daily. Even 96 percent of the farmers are using toxic pesticides which destroy the fertility of the soil. This year, for the first time in its history, Nigliris experienced widespread forest fires.

Due to the construction of more buildings, forest lands are reducing. Since the fertility of the soil is affected, just moderate rainfall is enough to cause landslides. Over all this, 22 percent of the tree cover in the region is being cut. Hence, air pollution has increased. In the river that runs beside the Coonoor bus stand, so much waste is dumped. Plastic products that harm the environment and affect people's health are seen piling in the river. Keeping these issues in mind, Clean Coonoor took up the initiative to clean the river up to Burliyar."

Many volunteers including Dr. Vasanthan, Prasannan Mapsavan also participated in the event.
