Chennai: A case was filed by renowned music maestro Ilayaraja seeking a ban on anyone singing his songs for commercial purposes was heard by the High Court. The Court has now banned singing Ilayaraja's songs online, on stage and for any other commercial purposes without prior permission from Ilayaraja.

Ilayaraja has been actively seeking this ban for quite some time now. He opined that the ban was long overdue since he held copyright for his own work. He claimed that a few are heaping monetary benefits by singing his songs on various platforms. He had also pressed charges against music companies like Aki, Echo Music and Giri Traders for using his songs without his permission for commercial purposes.

Based on his claims, the High Court had banned these companies from using his songs temporarily. On further investigation by the Court, Judge Anitha Sumanth permanently banned using Ilayaraja's songs, in the final hearing of the case today.

Apart from this, the Court has also ordered that Illayaraja's songs can be played in theatres and on all other social platforms especially online, radio channels and singing competitions only after his prior permission. Judge Anitha Sumanth also dismissed the case by Aki Music who had filed a separate case claiming they had bought rights for using Ilayaraja's songs for another 10 years.
