The Nilgiris: The district authorities in Nilgiris have issued an order that vehicles like a tourist bus, mini bus and jeep used for transport purposes should have a garbage bin inside the vehicle. The regional transport officers of the district are already actively implementing the new rule.

As tourists have become part and parcel of Nilgiris right through the year, civic authorities have been grappling with the mountain-size problem of how to avoid garbage being strewn everywhere to the extent of the picturesque Blue Hills landscape being marred by the piles of garbage right across every tourist spot and even in the towns of Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri.

To end the garbage menace, the district authorities have now ordered tourist vehicles to fix garbage bins inside the vehicles. The R.T.O of Nilgiris district, Kathiravan has said that this order will now be strictly adhered to. He also detailed on how licences of 5,078 individuals were temporarily cancelled for violating traffic rules and as a result in the past one year, there has been a visible decline int he number of accidents.

Lawsuits too have been filed for violating road rules such as drinking and driving, driving without seat belts and riding without helmets. "If motorists continue to violate such basic rules, then their licenses will be cancelled for five years," emphasized R.T.O Kathiravan.
