Corporation demolishes houses built on encroached land in Jeeva Nagar

Coimbatore: About 252 houses which were built on the encroached land in Jeeva Nagar in the past 40 years are being razed to the ground by the Municipal Township Department.

Coimbatore: About 252 houses which were built on the encroached land in Jeeva Nagar in the past 40 years are being razed to the ground by the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) on Tuesday.

The CCMC had issued several notices to these houses which were built on the land that belonged to the Corporation. Recently, the Corporation officials had ordered the residents to vacate their homes within 15 minutes and relocate to the multi-storey apartments in Keeranatham which had been allocated for them.

However, most of the residents did not relocate and instead filed a case in the Court. The case was dismissed by the Court and hence the Corporation officials began the process of demolishing the house.

4 JCBs and two tractors we're pressed into service from the morning of Tuesday. To avoid commotion and ensure safety, police personnel, fire engines and ambulances were deployed at the spot.

Backed by heavy security, officials are presently vacating the occupants. In spite of 132 houses demolished today, the residents of the remaining 120 houses have refused to vacate though a notice stating that their homes would be demolished in a couple of days has been issued to them.
