Sale of banned lottery tickets is becoming rampant across many parts of Coimbatore even after the city police had assigned an exclusive squad for clamping it. The Coimbatore City Police had banned sale of other states' lottery tickets in the city. In spite of that, many have continued to sell these banned lottery tickets. The city police arrested 53 people regarding this, between May 28 to May 30, based on the order from the Superintendent of Police.
The city police have also received complaints that lottery tickets from Kerala that are banned in Tamil Nadu are still being illegally sold in the outskirts of Coimbatore.
On an average, 30 are caught daily for selling banned lotteries among which only one or two are arrested, with the rest being released on police bail. Hence, the SP has ordered that those arrested should not be released on police bail.
Speaking to Simplicity, the SP stated that the Coimbatore Police Department is striving hard to eradicate the sale of banned lottery tickets.
"The illegal sellers are managing to escape using police bail. Hereafter, they will be directly handed over to the court after arrest. The public have sent many complaints regarding the same, and hence every issue will be addressed," reiterated SP Sujith Kumar.
