Breaking : Madras High Court dismisses plea filed by Minister SP Velumani against Arappor Iyakkam

Coimbatore : Responding to the plea moved by Minister SP Velumani against Arappor Iyakkam, demanding a ransom of Rs. 1 crore as compensation for levelling corruption charges on him, the Madras High Court dismissed the plea on Monday.


Coimbatore : Responding to the plea moved by Minister SP Velumani against Arappor Iyakkam, demanding a ransom of Rs. 1 crore as compensation for levelling corruption charges on him, the Madras High Court dismissed the plea on Monday. 

The Minister's 10 other pleas to ban Arappor Iyakkam, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) from discussing or alleging corruption charges on him and his aides any further were also dismissed. 

In last September, Arappor Iyakkam alleged that large scale tender violations had happened particularly in Chennai and Coimbatore Corporations by Municipal Administration Minister S.P. Velumani who misused his official position to obtain government civil contracts for his benami companies.

The case was filed by Jayaram Venkatesan, Managing Trustee of the NGO who demanded to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the allegations levelled against the Minister.

Upon directiona by the division bench of Justice M Sathyanarayanan and Justice P Rajamanickam, the DVAC commenced their probe on the Minister in March 2019. 

The bench also suo motu impleaded the department of municipal administration rural development and implementation of special programme, the Chennai Corporation and the Coimbatore Corporation as party respondents to the plea.
