Coimbatore : Though there has been technological advancement for processing, treatment and disposal of solid wastes, the real challenge lies in collection of wastes from households and establishments and transport them to the dump yard. With rapid urbanisation, the volume of wastes generated by households have doubled up.
Time to time, the City Corporation has been adopting novel ways to collect the wastes in a cost-effective manner, however lack of public co-operation and scarcity of manpower in the Corporation and municipalities had dumped such projects.
In a recent intitiative, the Coimbatore City and Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has ideated to double up collection vehicles to collect wastes from door to door. Thus, more waste collection vehicles will be procured, soon.
Bidding adieu to the waste collecting pushcarts and battery-operated vehicles which are not only time consuming but also labour intensive, the CCMC has plans of buying modernised new waste collection vehicles.
According to a reliable source from the Corporation, the civic body finds mini trucks more effective in waste collection. "The conservative pushcarts are not only labour intensive but also unhygienic. Further, the battery operated vehicles comes with the disadvantage of frequent battery draining", he noted.
"Currently, there are nearly 50 mini load trucks operating across all 100 wards in the city. To make the door to door waste collection effective and to reduce the time taken by the sanitary workers to collect waste from all households, CCMC has decided to purchase more trucks," he added.
"Collecting waste using mini trucks is less complicated. A driver and a sanitary worker is the maximum manpower required. They can stop-by at each house and collect garbage", he noted.
Now, that the model code of conduct has been withdrawn, CCMC has expedited the process of buying trucks.
