Coimbatore: Great news for the traders and public, as Tamil Nadu government has approved the proposal by Principal Secretary/Commissioner of Labour and decided to permit all shops and establishments to stay open 24x7 on all days of the year.
Soon, a notification regarding this is expected to be published in the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette.
In 2018, Maharashtra became the first State to implement 24x7 functioning of shops. Well before that, TN had approved shops and businesses to stay open 24x7 for a period of one year up to 2017, which was later extended for a further three years.
Now with the acceptance of the proposal, shops and businesses can remain open 24/7 across TN. However, restrictions like safety of women employees should be addressed by the respective organisations.
Though after obtaining written consent, the employer can allow a woman to work during the night, the employer should ensure her necessary protection, the proposal urged.
The notification added that no employer can allow any person to work for more than eight hours in a day or 48 hours in any week and the period of work including overtime shall not exceed 10.5 hours in any day and 57 hours in a week.
