Brain dead woman gives lease of life to five

On 2 October, 24-year old N Pavithra was riding pillion with her husband on their motorbike. Unexpectedly, the couple met with an accident near Gandhipuram. Pavithra who sustained severe head injuries was rushed to Sri Ramakrishna Hospital. Since then, she was said to be in coma. After several examinations, the expert crew of doctors declared her brain dead. Pavithra's family members generously proposed to donate her organs. A team of doctors harvested her liver, kidneys and corneas and sent to needy hospitals, thus giving a new lease of life to five. 

A press release from Sri Ramakrishna Hospital stated that her brain death was confirmed twice in an interval of six hours by the panel of doctors. The release also stated that this patient suffered a brain death due to traumatic brain injury. Dr. Rajagopal, Consultant Neurosurgeon, Dr. K Senthil Kumar, Intensivist, Dr. K. Asokan, Consultant Neurologist, Dr. Prabha Udayakumar, Anesthetist co-ordinated the organ harvesting and transplantation process. 

One kidney sent to Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH), while another went to a recipient at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital. Corneas were sent to Sankara Eye Hospital and liver to PSG Hospitals.

Sri Ramakrishna hospital is the Guinness record holder for “the most people to sign up as organ donors in eight hours”.
