Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Corporation is all set to light up the city with new LED lights, post May 23. Coimbatore city has 75,000 street lights in total and all the existing street lights in 60 old wards will be replaced by LED lights.
In 2011, 72 wards under the Corporation were reconstituted to 60 wards and 40 new wards were added. In all 100 wards, street light maintenance was given to private contractors. Due to complaints from the public about the lights not functioning properly and poor maintenance, the Corporation had changed the street lights in the newly added 40 wards to LED lights through contractors. In the remaining 60 old wards, the CCMC took up the job to change the existing street lights and a tender was called for. The tender was finalised and the job had been allotted to private contractors, a few weeks ago.
Due to the elections, with the Moral Code of Conduct (MCC) in place, new jobs could not begin but after May 23, the existing 58,000 street lights in the city are to be replaced with LED lights, at a cost of 74 crores. Under the Smart City project, 74 crores has been allotted for this project. The new LED lights have already been purchased and the contractor is to begin the job on May 24. A time line of six months has been fixed and the CCMC has asked contractors to finish the job within the stipulated period.
