Coimbatore Records Zero Rainfall Amid Persisting Humidity
SimpliCity News Team · 22 days ago
In a notable break from the rainfall witnessed across parts of Coimbatore district in recent weeks, the district recorded zero rainfall at all its 23 monitoring stations during the 24-hour period ending at 7.30 a.m. on September 7.
The development marks a sharp contrast to the weather conditions seen in the district’s western and hill regions in recent days, when rain-bearing conditions had continued over parts of the Western Ghats, Siruvani, Pillur catchment areas and notably Valparai hills.
Siruvani water level
Meanwhile, the Siruvani reservoir water level stood at 872.44 metres against its full reservoir level of 878.50 metres on September 7. The depth of water was reported at 29.65 feet, against a maximum depth of 49.53 feet (water level is restricted to 44.61 feet).
The useful storage available in the reservoir was reported at 288.28 million cubic feet (MCft). Water supply through the 1,000 mm, 500 mm and 450 mm main supply lines stood at 59.56 MLD, against a capacity of 101.40 MLD, according to the latest Siruvani water supply status.
Humid conditions continue
Despite the absence of measurable rainfall across the district during the latest reporting period, Coimbatore has continued to experience humid conditions, particularly during the morning and night hours.
Online weather data for September 7 showed Coimbatore at around 23°C in the morning, with the maximum expected to reach 34°C, while morning humidity stood at about 57%. Humidity continued to rise during late-night and early-morning hours, reaching 85% to 88%, while recent afternoon levels ranged between 36% and 46%, against a historical average of around 73% for this period.
The India Meteorological Department’s Coimbatore station had also recorded 78% relative humidity at 8.30 a.m. on September 6, indicating the persistence of moisture in the atmosphere despite the lack of widespread rainfall.
Weather observations over the past several days have also shown high humidity during parts of the day, with archived station data indicating relative humidity rising to around 94% during some periods, particularly during the cooler and wetter hours.
The IMD has forecast generally cloudy conditions for Coimbatore, with the possibility of rain continuing in the coming days.
