Coimbatore: The Forest Department has been placing salt balls in the Mettupalayam forests to help animals bear the brunt of summer.
Coimbatore: The Forest Department has been placing salt balls in the Mettupalayam forests to help animals bear the brunt of summer.
Water bodies in the Mettupalayam forest range have dried up due to drought, with trees and leaves being scorched. The Mettupalayam forest region which is sprawled across 23,000 acres lies in the foothills of the Western Ghats and is home to many wild animals like the tiger, leopard, bear and deer. The number of elephants in this region are very high. With the seasonal rainfall failing and summer setting in earlier, heavy drought has been prevailing in the Mettupalayam forest region. With the forest laid bare without its green cover, animals are losing their immunity.
Taking this into account, the Forest Department has proactively constructed tanks and filled them with water. Salt balls with all essential minerals have also been placed across the forest region. Since animals have been moving in large numbers toward the water tanks every day, the Forest Department has also placed salt balls near the tanks. "While the animals have water along with salt, their immunity will increase," stated forest officials.
