Coimbatore: The India Smart Cities Award Contest (ISAC) is organized under the Smart Cities Mission, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India.
Coimbatore: The India Smart Cities Award Contest (ISAC) is organized under the Smart Cities Mission, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India.
This is one of the important activities initiated under the mission, where pioneering city strategies, projects and ideas are recognized based on innovation, impact and replicability or scalability. The ISAC will recognize and reward cities, projects and innovative ideas that are promoting sustainable development in urban areas in India, as well as stimulating inclusive, equitable, safe, healthy and collaborative cities, thus enhancing quality of life for all.
Coimbatore has cleared round one among the smart cities that participated in the contest. 33 smart cities have made it to round 2, with Coimbatore and Chennai being the only two cities from Tamil Nadu. The deadline for submitting the application along with a detailed proposal is May 15 and officials in the smart city project are putting in their best effort to meet the deadline. The award was launched in June 2017 with an objective to reward cities, projects and innovative ideas, promoting sustainable development in cities.
The award is given in 3 categories - Innovative Idea Award, City Award and Project Award. Only selected Smart Cities are eligible participants for the award. Respective ULBs or Smart City SPVs need to submit proposals for this award. The proposals submitted by ULBs/Smart City SPVs are evaluated by the technical committee of international, multilateral experts from UN Habitat, Asian Development Bank (ADB) and National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) based on Innovation, Impact, and Replicability or Scalability. The City Award was decided based on the cities’ performances on their awards score and on a weekly ranking score. Equal weightage was given to both.
Coimbatore won an award in 2018 under the Urban environment category. Speaking on this, a Senior Corporation official said, "The application process by itself is a lengthy and complicated process which requires a lot of supporting documents to be submitted along with the application. We have cleared the first round. As far as projects are concerned, out of the allotted 1108 crores, projects worth 60 crores were implemented and projects worth 600 crores is under progress. So we are not sure if we can win the award, but we are trying our best," he added.
