Coimbatore : A group of people staged a demonstration in front of the District Collectorate insisting that necessary action be taken against those who attacked people from the Scheduled Caste community at the Kumittipathy Mariamman temple festival.

The 'Chittirai Thiruvizha' festival was held yesterday at Kumittipathy Mariamman temple. People from the SC community also joined in the procession with their offerings. It is alleged that a section of people stopped their procession and denied them entry into the temple. It is reported that caste-based derogatory words too were used to chase them away. The miscreants ordered the youth in the group to stop using drums, but apparently those belonging to the SC disagreed and continued with their procession. Irked by this, the miscreant group attacked them with wooden sticks and rods. Six persons were injured in this incident and admitted in the Government Hospital for treatment.
