The jasmine-like Coffee Blossoms are a sight that will stop you in your tracks to just take in the pristine beauty, even as they appear almost spontaneously and disappear even faster. The coffee flower, the flower shoot and the fruit set of the coffee flower has a fragrance, shape and colour, reminiscent of jasmine, and apparently gives an indication of the possible quantity of the expected coffee crop.
The coffee plant usually flowers after the first showers of the rainy season, right after the dry season. An adult tree can have 30,000 to 40,000 flowers, which enhances the beauty of the lush green coffee plantations in Coonoor and Kotagiri.
Farmers in Coonoor and Kotagiri who are into coffee plantations have reason to rejoice even as Coffee Flowers have now bloomed due to the heavy rainfall that Nilgiris has been receiving this past week. “There will be a good harvest from our coffee plantations if the rainfall is from 25mm to 50mm. If the rainfall exceeds this, then it can affect the coffee flowers,” opined farmers in the district.
A variety of coffee including Arabica, Robusta are cultivated here in Nilgiris. The coffee yield was good last year since the district received both summer rainfall and seasonal rainfall on time. After harvesting, coffee buds began to bloom since February. But, a majority of the buds were scorched this year since there was no adequate rainfall which resulted in coffee production being affected up to 30 percent, compared to last year.
