The Nilgiris : Tourists who have been visiting the famous Sim’s Park in Coonoor are aggrieved with the high parking fees being levied on their vehicles which are parked on either side of the road leading to Sim's Park.

The district administration has fixed the parking fee at Rs.3 for cars, Rs.5 for vans and Rs.10 for buses. But, some private contractors who claim to be in charge of parking spots around Sim's Park collect parking fees ranging from Rs.70 to Rs.150.

Uma Shankar of an NGO opines, "Rs.250 is collected from every tourist vehicle citing Rs.150 as parking fee and Rs.100 for the police. Police officials should investigate whether officials from the police department are in nexus with these fraudsters. How can any district administration levy parking fees on vehicles parked on the main roadways? Tourists are being fleeced and thus avoid visiting Sim’s Park owing to this parking scam. Also, due to this, hundreds of people who depend on the tourism business in and around Sim's Park are being severely affected," he added.

In response to the allegations made by tourists, the Municipal Revenue Officer, Narayanan says, "We have collected tickets from the contractor who charges these extra parking fees. We have given him a week's duration. His contract will be cancelled if he continues to indulge in such acts. The issue has been informed to the police station at Sim’s Park and officials will take action," he reassured.
