Based on the sighting of crescent moon, and the start of the lunar month on Tuesday, Muslims across the World have commenced their observance of Ramadan month.
During this month, which is regarded to be a holy month, Muslims fast for the entire month abstaining from food and drink from dawn to dusk. Consumption of liquor, cigarettes or caffeine is also strictly prohibited during the fasting.
At sunset, they break the daylong fast, by gathering for an evening meal known as 'iftar'. Muslim families invite friends from other religions also to take part in iftar.
Muslims believe that fasting during the month of Ramadan draws them closer to God by preaching and practicing self-control, remembrance and humility.
