Coimbatore : Forest Personnel of the Periyanaickenpalayam Forest Range on Sunday morning arrested five men for hunting peafowls using air rifle near Ookayanur today.
According to sources, foresters had spotted seven men walking near the foothills at Ookayanur with rifle and on seeing the men in kakhi, they had fled.
However, foresters rounded up five men including R. Murugan (37) from Ookayanur, N. Subramani (49) from Kanuvaipalayam, N. Sakthivel (38) from Seeliyur, R. Praveen (24) from Avarampalayam and V. Mohan Kumar (39) from Periyanaickenpalayam and arrested them.
The top two accused K. Manikandan (23) from Pelamedu and N. Saravanan (36) from Dhevanapuram bolted and escaped from foresters.
The men reportedly possessed an air rifle and a peafowl carcass and both were confiscated. The men were later produced before a judicial magistrate after being booked under the Wildlife Protection Act.
