Coimbatore: A herd of wild elephants have destroyed hundreds of banana crops, cultivated on more than an acre of land at Tholampalayam village, here on the wee hours of Sunday.

The rampage by the elephants has caused a loss of over Rs. 50,000, lament the growers.

Owing to summer, large herds of stray into farmlands that are close to hills and forest land. The residents of Tholampalayam are struck in panic, as a herd of elephants have camped in the reserve area adjacent to farmlands and rampage crops during night hours.

They have jointly urged the forest officials to chase the herd back to the forest and to fairly compensate the affected farmers.
