Based on a tip-off, a team of food safety officials inspected fruit wholesale, retail shops and godowns in Coimbatore. During the search, officials raided four fruit shops near Ganapathi on Coimbatore-Sathi road on Saturday.
A total of 220 kg of mangoes were found to be ripened artificially using calcium carbide. All the mangoes were later destroyed.

The shop keepers were warned that they could be booked for violating FSSAI rules and can be fined up to 1 lakh followed by imprisonment for six months.
