Coimbatore: While people in the State are already reeling under soaring temperatures, the peak summer season also known as 'Kathiri' or 'Agni Natchathiram' in Tamil, begins tomorrow and ends on May 28.
During this 26-day period, the mercury level is expected to hover beyond 40 degree mark across the State.
As Coimbatore is already experiencing high humidity levels, the 'Kathiri' summer which is expected to bring heat waves has left the people panic. Though a short spell of rain was reported a few days back, intense heat will hit the district during this 26 days, 'agni natchatiram' period.
Briefing on the change in temperatures, Ramanathan, Director of Agro Climate Research Station at TNAU said, "Last year, heavy summer showers saved us from the wrath of agni natchathiram. However, this year, as we have received very less rainfall, people will feel the impact of agni natchathiram".
He added that people should consume water rich fruits like coconut, watermelon and cucumber and stay hydrated. People should also keep water bowls at their houses to quench the thirsts of birds.
"Those who venture during noon hours should cover their faces and wear caps", he advised.
