District IMA President warns of legal action on enraged relatives who attack hospitals

Coimbatore: District President of Indian Medical Association has condemned the act of enraged relatives attacking hospitals, in case of death of patients during treatment.


Coimbatore: District President of Indian Medical Association has condemned the act of enraged relatives attacking hospitals, in case of death of patients during treatment. He also requested the relatives to approach the IMA, to report any unexpected mishap during the time of treatment. 

In an incident that occurred recently, a youngster with injuries who was taken to a private hospital at Edayarpalayam here died allegedly due to delay in treatment. Irked by his death, the relatives of the deceased hurled stones on the hospital and damaged the window glasses and the name board of the hospital.

In a bid to address this issue, a press meet was held here on Thursday during which Dr. Mariappan, President of IMA Coimbatore said "Legal action will be initiated against relatives and people who attack hospitals and doctors, if a patient dies unexpectedly in the process of treatment. Under such circumstances, the affected people can register their grievance as a legal complaint". 

"If people attack hospitals, legal action will be initiated under hospital protection act 48 of 2008 in which the accused will be booked under non-bailable section", he noted.

He also added that a doctor who did not treat the patient cannot provide death certificate.
