22 candidates in the fray for Sulur by-election

Coimbatore: For the Sulur by-election to be held on May 19, the nominations of 22 candidates have been approved. Filing of nomination papers were done from April 22 till 29.

Coimbatore: For the Sulur by-election to be held on May 19, the nominations of 22 candidates have been approved. Filing of nomination papers were done from April 22 till 29. 

A total of 61 nominations had been filed, but after reviewing the nomination papers, only 22 candidates were approved. Candidates in the fray include DMK candidate Pongalur Palanisamy, AIADMK candidate Kandhasamy, AMMK candidate Sukumar, MNM candidate Mayilsamy and Naam Tamilar Katchi candidate Vijayaragavan. 39 nominations were rejected. 

Though today was the last day for withdrawal of nominations, none withdrew their nomination, following which it was confirmed officially that 22 candidates will contest for the Sulur assembly seat. Along with the two Tamil Nadu political bigwigs, the DMK and the AIADMK, Ulaippali Makkal Katchi, Voolal Edhiruppu Iyakkam Katchi, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) and Naam Tamilar Katchi are the registered parties who will be contesting in the Sulur by-election. 

There are 16 independent candidates and a candidate of the AMMK. The DMK, AIADMK, Naam Tamilar Katchi and MNM parties will be contesting on their own symbols. The AMMK candidate who is contesting as an independent candidate will contest on the gift box symbol. Work has commenced to allocate symbols for independent candidates.
