A textile manufacturers' consultation meeting was held at Karumathampatti with Nithya Manoharan, former Panchayat President presiding over the meeting. Former Minister and DMK’s Sulur by-election in-charge A V Velu addressed the gathering, saying, "I recollect the days when Coimbatore was called the “Manchester of South India” because of its textile industries. But these textile industries are suppressed now. It is the duty of the Government to prevent a business from being suppressed. The Government will give some concession for companies, which assure jobs for 10,000 workers. This is how foreign companies entered our State. But we should check, on how many people these companies employ. The District Collectors were ordered to inspect the number of Tamil people employed in these companies when Kalaignar Karunanidhi was CM. He had also stipulated the number of Tamil workers who ought to employed in other companies which were established later," he added.
"Jobs have been suppressed and economically we are pushed backwards after GST was introduced. Compared to other 33 income generating districts, Somanur has more number of power looms. The owners of power looms were affected on a large scale. This West zone has become a reason to prevent DMK coming to power. Hence, if you make our candidate win in this constituency, there will be a change in regime and we will find a solution for the current problems," reiterated A V Velu urging those gathered at the meeting to vote for DMK in the Sulr by-election..
The DMK leader reassured people right through his campaign tour. saying, "Kalaignar gave 500 units of free electricity. But Amma (Jayalalitha) on purpose provided 750-unit electricity and changed the tariff. No one was benefited from this. The Electricity Department has 2 lakh crore loan and the Government has 3 lakh crore loan. If DMK comes to regime, 1000 units can be provided free of cost. A committee should be formed to change that tariff. That committee should give inputs to the government regarding ways to restore textile industries. A new law should be passed to stop stocking of excess cotton and stipulate how much cotton can be stocked. Now the State is under bad governance which may be due to the incompetence of the ruling party administrators," he added.
Former Minister A Raja, N Karthik MLA Murugan, Y Prakash and industrialists Sakthivel, Palanisami, Ganga Murhty and Nithya Murthy participated in the meeting.
