'Japan flowers’ in Nilgiris unfailingly catch the eye of the tourist every summer

Nilgiris : Also known as the Blue Mountains, the Nilgiris have their presence in the southern end of the Western Ghats in the Indian subcontinent. Within an altitude range of 1000 m to 2500 m, the Nilgiris provide shelter to some of the best hill stations in the country. Along with this, the hills are most importantly famed for its sprawling tea plantations.

The ‘Japan trees’ which are planted in tea estates and even in residential areas during the British rule for the purpose of both decorative value and shadow for the tea plants are in full bloom once a year. During this time, the leaves shed and the flowers bloom in a bright pink hue. Tourists thronging the Nilgiris are enamoured every year by these blooms which are also part of the roadside landscapes on the Ooty and Kotagiri national highways.
