The peak tourist season in Nilgiris is between May 1 and May 25. Even as resorts and star hotels are packed to full capacity during summer in Nilgiris, bookings for lodges and cottages too have increased substantially. While luxury accommodations have a fixed price, cottages are allocated to anyone willing to pay a higher rent.
And tourists who land up in the district with no prior booking are willing to pay any price for any decent accommodation, especially during weekends when tourist inflow is at its peak.
From May 1 onward, lodges which generally charge Rs.800 are now allocating rooms only for those tourists willing to pay up to Rs.1500. Likewise, in guest houses, the normal rent which is Rs.2000 has now been hiked to Rs.3,500.
Following this, tourists have urged the district administration to constitute a team to monitor lodges and cottages that offer rented accommodation, and to take action against those levying hefty charges on tourists.
