Coimbatore: Selvaraj who sells soap and phenyl is a resident of Balaji Nagar, in Cheran Managar.

He arrived at the Collectorate this morning along with his wife Shanthi (37) and daughters Sundari (11) and Dharanya (9). Suddenly they poured petrol over their entire bodies and tried to immolate themselves. The media and the public at the spot stopped them from doing so. The police who arrived at the spot took them for enquiry, after arranging for them to be cleaned up and giving them a change of clothes.

Selvaraj explained the reason for their suicide attempt, saying, "A person has built a house near my home and has been residing in it for the past two years. Arguments arose every time my goats grazed on his plants that were in front of his house.

He also threatened us claiming himself to be a police officer, and hence not knowing what to do, we decided to self-immolate." When the police asked Selvaraj whether he had filed a complaint in any police station regarding this, he said, "Since he threatened us that he is a police officer, we did not file any complaint in the police station.”
