New Delhi: The Tamil Nadu Election Commission has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court requesting an additional three months time to conduct local body elections in Tamil Nadu.
New Delhi: The Tamil Nadu Election Commission has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court requesting an additional three months time to conduct local body elections in Tamil Nadu. Posts in local bodies have been vacant from October 24, 2016 for which K K Ramesh had filed a case requesting the Supreme Court to order the Tamil Nadu Election Commission to announce dates for local body elections.
After hearing this case on October 26, 2018, the Supreme Court ordered the EC and TN Chief Secretary to explain about the delay in conducting local body elections in four weeks time.
When this case had come up for hearing on November 11, 2018, an additional four weeks time was provided, with the next hearing scheduled for January 21, 2019 in front of the Supreme Court Registrar.
Advocate P Vinod Khanna who had appeared on behalf of the TN Government requested additional time. The Registrar who had ordered for four weeks additional time also reiterated that further extension will not be given. The Registrar had also ordered that at the next hearing of the case, a detailed report should be submitted regarding the conduct of the election. Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu EC has filed an affidavit seeking an additional three months time to conduct the elections. The hearing of this case has been postponed for tomorrow.
