Brain dead Coimbatore youth gives lease of life to six

Coimbatore: A 25-year-old young man, who was declared brain dead at the City's Ramakrishna hospital gave a new lease of life to six patients, as his heart valves, liver, kidneys, and eyes were harvested for transplantation.


Coimbatore: A 25-year-old young man, who was declared brain dead at the City's Ramakrishna hospital gave a new lease of life to six patients, as his heart valves, liver, kidneys, and eyes were harvested for transplantation.

On April 13, Manoj Kumar (25) sustained grievous injuries after he fell from his two-wheeler while driving back home from work. He was admitted at Ramakrishna hospital for intensive treatment. However, he was declared brain dead after a series of tests known as the 'Apnoea tests' were performed by experts. 

After getting consent for organ donation his family members, the team of doctors performed the required procedures to harvest his vital organs - heart, liver, kidneys and eyes on April 16. One of his kidneys were transplanted to an ailing patient at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital. And, Manoj's heart, liver, the other kidney and both eyes were donated to patients in other hospitals as per the Government Rota.
