Coimbatore: The relatives of a nurse who was working at the Coimbatore Government Hospital protested at the Government Hospital in the city on Wednesday, accusing a lady doctor of gross medical negligence which resulted in two deaths, that of the mother and foetus.

Nirmala (35) worked as a nurse at GH and lived with her husband Suresh (38) in Sivananda Colony. It is reported that six months ago, Nirmala who was pregnant had consulted at a private hospital in Peelamedu for her routine check up.

"In this situation, Doctor Thilagavathi, a gynecologist at the Government Hospital advised Nirmala to consult at her private hospital for delivery. Since then, Nirmala has been regularly visiting the private clinic of Doctor Thilagavathi. However, two days ago, the doctor had suggested a scan for Nirmala but the scan reports revealed that the baby had died inside the mother’s womb," allege relatives of the deceased nurse.

They further allege that the doctor had not initiated any further course of medical action to remove the dead foetus. Yesterday, Nirmala suffered a bout of fits, following which the matter was escalated to Doctor Thilagavathi who was at GH. The doctor allegedly had arrived an hour later and removed the dead foetus from the mother's womb, and handed the remains to the relatives of Nirmala who reportedly performed the last rites.

After returning to the private hospital, the kin found Nirmala allegedly in a critical condition and since the hospital was ill-equipped to deal with critical cases, she was rushed to the Coimbatore Government Hospital. However, not responding to treatment, Nirmala died at the GH.

The grieving relatives staged a road-roko in front of GH today demanding stern action against the lady doctor for her negligence in delaying the removal of the foetus that had died two days ago in the mother’s womb.
