Coimbatore: Raja (60), a resident of Pollachi Kottur was shifted from Pollachi Government Hospital to Coimbatore Government Hospital owing to severe stomach pain.

He was admitted in a cancer ward for his ailment. His wife Shanthi who had accompanied him fainted in the ward, all of a sudden. Due to the absence of doctors in the ward and clueless on what to do, nurses who were present there informed medical assistants to take her to ICU. But the medical assistants reportedly refused to do so.

Aware of crucial minutes ticking by, Shanthi's relatives and those present at the spot carried her in a stretcher. Not knowing where to go, they were wandering around in the premises before finally finding the ICU. She was then admitted there and treated by the doctors.

Shanthi’s husband Raja said, “Being poor, we came to Coimbatore GH for treatment. My wife who accompanied me for my treatment fainted suddenly. A nurse who was there administered first aid. Since there was no medical assistant to help us, we ourselves carried her in a stretcher and admitted her in ICU after a great deal of struggle.”

In spite of reports in the media about non-availability of doctors during night shift in GH, lack of adequate medical assistants and facilities like basic stretchers, the GH management continues to lack empathy and displays a complacent attitude which irks patients and their families.
