High Court bans Chennai-Salem eight-lane project

Chennai: Months after the proposed Chennai-Salem expressway created a furore in Tamil Nadu, the High Court ruled today that the land acquisition done for the Chennai–Salem eight-lane highway is not valid. The High Court has also ordered the cancellation of the Government Order for the project. The High Court Judges passed the ruling saying, "The land acquisition done for the Chennai–Salem eight-lane is invalid. This judgment was given after examining 15 questions and we are ordering to cancel the Government Order passed regarding the eight-lane project.”


Chennai: Months after the proposed Chennai-Salem expressway created a furore in Tamil Nadu, the High Court ruled today that the land acquisition done for the Chennai–Salem eight-lane highway is not valid. 

The High Court has also ordered the cancellation of the Government Order for the project. The High Court Judges passed the ruling saying, "The land acquisition done for the Chennai–Salem eight-lane is invalid. This judgment was given after examining 15 questions and we are ordering to cancel the Government Order passed regarding the eight-lane project.”

Judges Sivagnanam and Bavani Subarayan have been hearing the case registered by the farmers of five districts of Tamil Nadu against the Salem-Chennai eight-lane highway project, for more than six months now. During the hearing, the Central Government gave their assurance that the project would not continue if the Central Environmental Ministry does not approve the project. After the completion of arguments from both sides, the judgment was passed this morning.
