Kariya Malai near Manjoor of Nilgiris has many tea estates. Recently, due to the movement of an elephant in the tea estates of the region, tea estate workers stayed back in their homes. It is now reported that the elephant damaged the entrance gate of the Sivan temple in the Kariya Malai region, after which it went to Kethai village. People in this area have urged the forest department to chase away the elephant back into the forests.
