The Nilgiris: The Nilgiris Mountain Railway weekend special train service for summer which was previously from Mettupalayam to Coonoor has now been extended to Ooty, from today.
The NMR which chugs along daily across the picturesque terrain from Mettupalayam station to Ooty, commences its journey at 7.10 am in Mettupalayam. For the benefit of thronging tourists int he summer clamouring for a ride on the world-famous NMR, special NMR trains services were operated from December 8, on weekends alone. These trains leave Mettupalayam station at 9.10 am and reach Coonoor at 12.30 pm. As this is operated only up to Coonoor station, tourists feel hard pressed to hire private taxis or hitch buses to reach Ooty.
Since tourists have been requesting railway authorities to extend the special train services up to Ooty, the railway authorities have finally given a nod this summer for the special train services to extend up to Ooty station.
Five high-tech rail boxes manufactured in Chennai and Perambalur railway workshops were brought to Mettupalayam recently and assembled. The first class coach of the special train comprises of 16 seats, out of a total of 132 seats in the train. It is expected that the special train services being extended up to Ooty with the fancy new coaches could attract a larger number of tourists to travel by NMR, this summer season.
