Coimbatore : Considered to be a 'rare and complex' case, the surgical gastroenterologist department of PSG Hospital have treated a 16-year-old Yemen girl who accidentally consumed acid and developed a blockage of the food pipe and the stomach.
The surgery had lasted for 10 hours and is regarded to be a 'rare and complex' surgery. The girl who was unable to intake food from 2017 is back to normal and regaining her lost weight.
According to a release from the hospital, the young girl accidentally consumed acid in 2017 and suffered several internal injuires. Though the girl was treated initially in Yemen and underwent removal of part of her stomach and self expanding metal stenting of the narrowed food pipe, her stent had slipped down and was not able to intake food.
The young girl lost half of her weight and was unable to get treatment in her country. In 2018, she along with her family approached PSG Hospitals for treatment. An expert team of doctors and surgeons from gastroenterology department examines her condition and performed a surgery for placing a feeding tube in her intestine in November 2018.
The procedure turned out to be successful and she gained 10 kg before the planned major surgery. She underwent a major surgery on January 21, 2019 which included a key hole procedure for removal of the diseased esophagus and stomach along with the stuck stent (thoracosopic esophagectomy, completion gastrectomy and esophagocoloplasty).
Her food passage was reconstructed by joining her large intestine to the food pipe in neck and to small intestine in the abdomen. The patient recovered well and was discharged after 2 weeks and gained an additional 10 kilograms. Presently, the girl is able to consume food normally like all others and has been progressing in her health.
Only a few of these operations occur by key hole surgery all over the country and department of surgical gastroenterology lead by Dr.K Balu in PSG hospitals has the expertise for major Laparoscopic surgeries including cancer operations for the food pipe, stomach, colon and rectum.
"A truly life changing treatment was possible because of the multi speciality expertise including Surgical gastroenterology, Medical gastroenterology, Anesthesia, ICU, Physiotherapy, Nutritionist and dedicated staff nurses.
We join the patient and her family in celebrating the success story of a young girl whose hopes about future is revived. She is leaving the country soon to restart her normal life.
