A demonstration of rescue management activities in the event of an earthquake was conducted at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) premises in Coimbatore. TNAU and the Arakkonam Disaster Management Committee jointly organized this event. It was highlighted at the event that Selvapuram, P N Pudur, VOC Nagar and R S Puram areas in Coimbatore are more prone to earthquakes.
Earlier, an awareness program about Disaster Management was held at the Anna Auditorium in the TNAU campus. Dr. N Kumar, Vice Chancellor, TNAU, Rekha Nambiyar (Senior commandant, 4th Battalion), Rajan Balu (Deputy Commandant, 4th Battalion), Dr. N Kalyanasundaram, Dean, Agriculture Department and Dr. D Raguchandar, Dean, Students Welfare spoke about the importance of disaster management.
Rajan Balu (Deputy Commandant, 4th Battalion) elaborated on the types of disasters, various levels of disasters depending on their intensity, activities of the Disaster Management team, various groups of the Disaster Management team and the Do’s and Don'ts in the event of a disaster.
He said, “Everyone should be aware of the Do’s and Don’ts during a disaster, especially the precautionary measures to be taken during earthquakes. The possibility of an earthquake in South India, especially in Tamil Nadu is rare, but the possibility of an earthquake in Coimbatore is high. It was said that in the year 1900, an earthquake measuring 6.9 in magnitude had occurred and was felt up to 25,000 sq. km, in which many people died. Out of 72 wards in Coimbatore, a big earthquake can happen in 35 wards, whereas it will be mild in other 35 wards," he added.
Rajan Balu felt that students will understand clearly only by a demonstration on how to protect themselves when such a calamity as the 1900 earthquake in Coimbatore is repeated. Following this, a demonstration was done by the Earthquake Disaster Management team.
Members of the National Disaster Rescue team, State Disaster Rescue team, Rapid Action Force, Red Cross Society, Forest Department, Fire and Rescue Department, District Rural Police, Tamil Nadu Special Force, Coimbatore District Home Guards and more than 200 people of the TNAU fraternity participated in the disaster rescue operations demonstration. More than 500 TNAU students witnessed the event.
