Coimbatore : A wild elephant aged between 10 and 12 that came into contact with an electric fence was electrocuted at a private farm near the Bhavani River in Sirumugai, today.

The tusker was roaming close to the farm encroached upon the Bhavani Sagar reservoir backwater area and had come into contact with the electric fence around midnight, while trying to enter the farm. It was electrocuted and succumbed on the spot. The carcass was spotted by foresters and the farmer M Nasser Ali was immediately detained.

An inquiry is on to ascertain if the farmer had directly connected the fence rather than energising it using a solar powered battery. A post-mortem is to be conducted on the elephant’s carcass in the presence of NGOs.
