Coimbatore : An election training program was conducted on March 24, for 14,746 teachers and Government employees who have been appointed as polling booth staff.

Sources say that a total of 955 employees did not turn up for the training that day since they were not willing to engage in election duties. Hence, the District Administration has sent a notice to them seeking explanation for their absence at the training program.

“More than 13,000 employees are required to work in 3072 polling booths in Coimbatore District. 14,746 Government school teachers and Government staff from all departments have been informed about the election process.

The first phase of training happened on March 24 in 10 parliamentary constituencies under a team of Assistant Election Officers, Deputy Collector and other competent officers. But, 955 people did not participate in this and hence a notice has been sent to them seeking their explanation.

If they do not respond with a proper explanation, action will be taken against them. Pregnant women, the differently abled and the sick can be excused after submitting relevant proof, but the rest should engage in election duties," opined an electoral officer.

"The second and third phase of training is scheduled for April 6 and 13 where topics like activities of polling booth staff, clearing doubts of voters and handling the ballot machine will be covered. EVMs will be brought to the training centers and the staff will be trained on them," added the officer.
