Coimbatore: The Centre for Extension Activities of Karunya Deemed University has set up a Computer Laboratory in the Coimbatore Central Prison, to enable the inmates to acquire skills in using computers. Last year, as part of the sesquicentennial celebrations of the birth of Mahatma Gandhiji, the Outreach Club members of Karunya organized cultural events for the prisoners. By way of entertaining them through skits, they drove home the importance of education.

During that occasion, the prisoners expressed their interest in acquiring computer skills and requested for a Computer Laboratory. Understanding the need of the hour at the prison. Karunya University took the initiative of setting up a Computer Laboratory and also installed computer systems. This laboratory provides a platform for learning computer skills which will in turn provide a means to make a new start and live as good citizens. Books on moral values, 50 chairs and 100 rose plants for the prison's garden were presented. He also assured that in the coming days some faculty and students of Karunya would visit the prison and give them special coaching in learning computer skills.

During the inauguration on March 27, 2019, the Vice Chancellor Dr. Mannar Jawahar delivered the special address. He emphasized the fact that people are born good, but sometimes circumstances make them indulge in wicked deeds. When a person continues to commit the same mistakes, he is punished. But it is necessary to turn away from the past mistakes and lead a new life. He underscored this thought with a song.
The Superintendent of the Central Prison, Krishnaraj and a few prison officials attended the program which was arranged by the Registrar, Dr. Elijah Blessing along with Dr. Manoj, Head, CEA, Prof. Karthikeyan and NSS student volunteers.
