Police confiscate 5 lorries for sand smuggling on Mettupalayam Road

Coimbatore : During regular checks on the four-lane Mettupalayam road, police halted five lorries covered with tarpaulin. Upon checking, they found the lorries were carrying sand illegally from Karur, without proper documents.

The police have handed over the lorries to the Mettupalayam Tahsildar office. Income tax officers who investigated have registered this case under 'illegal sand smuggling' and submitted the relevant documents in Court. Earlier, there have been complaints regarding illegal sand smuggling happening in the Mettupalayam -Sirumugai area. Sand has been smuggled from the Cauvery river beds in Karur and hidden in a secret place, and sold for Rs.15000 per unit, illegally.
